Flat pricing fits when task volume is stable and predictable across customers, your inference costs are low relative to contract value, you're selling to enterprises with rigid budgets, your category has heavy outcome-attribution ambiguity, or you're early-stage and can't afford to build metering. A contract-review agent that processes a steady stream of documents for a law firm is a clean flat-pricing candidate.
Flat pricing is dangerous when usage variance between customers is enormous, because a single power user on a flat plan can destroy your margins while light users subsidize them. It's also wrong when your value genuinely scales with volume in a way customers accept, when inference is a large share of your cost, or when you're pursuing land-and-expand where expansion is automatic usage growth and metering is the engine of that expansion. A coding agent whose heaviest customer runs 100x the tasks of the median should not offer that customer the same flat price as everyone else.
The honest answer for most vendors is that the right model depends on the distribution of usage across their base, not on which model is fashionable. If usage is tightly clustered, flat works and customers love it. If it's a long-tailed power-law distribution, flat pricing quietly transfers money from your heaviest, most-engaged customers to your lightest ones, which is exactly backwards.
The Hybrid Compromise Most Vendors Land On
In practice, the smartest GaaS companies aren't choosing flat or metered. They're building a base-plus-usage structure that gives the buyer a predictable floor and the vendor upside on heavy users. This is the hybrid pricing model done right: a flat platform fee that covers the relationship, support, and a baseline of usage, then metered or tiered usage above that line, usually with a floor-and-ceiling structure so the customer's worst-case bill is capped.
This hybrid threads the needle. The buyer gets a number for procurement and a budget ceiling, which kills most of the anxiety and most of the finance-review friction. The vendor keeps usage-based upside on the customers who genuinely consume more, preserving the expansion motion. And because the base fee is real revenue regardless of usage, the vendor isn't fully exposed to a quiet month tanking their MRR.
The lesson from the flat-pricing comeback isn't that metering was wrong. It's that pure metering ignored the human and organizational realities of how agents get bought. Predictability has a price, and buyers will happily pay it.
